On the Watertown Seal is a picture of an English Colonist and an Indian exchanging, as peace tokens,  bread for fish.  Captain Roger Clap landed at Nantasket Point in 1630 and rode up Charles River to Gerry's Landing with the first party of Watertown Colonists.

The Recreation Department runs a wide-range of programs throughout the year. There are programs such as arts and crafts, t-ball, and soccer for pre-school youngsters. Flag-tag football, basketball, gym hockey, softball, baton twirling, and tennis are some of the programs run for elementary school youngsters. We have added a Summer Basketball program for both girls and boys middle school age at Casey Playground courts on Watertown Street and the same program for high school students at the Saltonstall Park court. Friday night and vacation drop-in gym programs, basketball, and skiing / boarding are available for middle and high school students. Recreation can obtain season ski passes for our residents at a reduced cost.

We have added a Dodge Ball night for high school students one night a week throughout the winter months. Saturdays from 12:00 noon to 1:30pm we have gym hockey at the Hosmer School for more fun and excersize. This age group also participates in our Wachusett Ski/Board Program on Saterday Nights.

The Recreation Department also conducts adult spring tennis program. There is a wide-range of programs for the citizens with special needs in the community. The summer programming also offers many recreational opportunities for all the citizens of Watertown.

The Recreation Department issues picnic and ball field permits for the citizens of Watertown to enjoy the towns many outdoor facilities. Information on privately run groups such as Watertown Youth Baseball, Watertown Youth Basketball, Watertown Pop Warner Football, Watertown Youth Soccer, Watertown Youth LacrosseLady Raiders Girls Hockey, Watertown Legion  Baseball, and other groups can be obtained through the Watertown Recreation Office.

Mission Statement
It is the mission of the Watertown Recreation Department to provide the citizens of Watertown with varied and comprehensive leisure time programs. We will work and/or assist any of the Town’s agencies and citizens to improve or develop new programs.

The department will also work with these groups to improve the recreational facilities in Watertown.
