Basics
All Disasters
  • Remain Calm
  • Stay Informed: Listen to local emergency officials and/ or local news or radio for news on what's happening and await further instructions
  • Check for Injuries: In the case of a local disaster, if appropriate, give first aid and get help for those most severly injured

If an event occurs near your home
  • Check for damage using flashlights only.  Do not use combustible materials or turn on electrical switches.
  • Check for fire and gas leaks.
  • In the case of a gas leak, evacuate all from the building.  If possible, open windows and turn off the gas valve.
  • Check on neighbors, especially the elderly, disabled, or infirmed.
  • Call family contact.  Do not use phones unless necessary.  This allows open lines for emergency workers to use.
