On the Watertown Seal is a picture of an English Colonist and an Indian exchanging, as peace tokens,  bread for fish.  Captain Roger Clap landed at Nantasket Point in 1630 and rode up Charles River to Gerry's Landing with the first party of Watertown Colonists.

Permits for Fields and Picnics
Permitting for Fields

Recreation Department accepts applications from the Watertown Public Schools, youth leagues, adult teams and leagues and private schools beginning October 15, 2012 for the spring and summer 2013 seasons to be issued beginning December 1, 2012. Field applications for the fall 2013 season will be accepted after January 1st and permits will be issued based on priority beginning February 1, 2013.

Permitting for Picnic/Barbecue

Arsenal Park: Recreation Department accepts applications for picnics at the Arsenal Park for both residents and non-residents on a first come basis. There are 19 tables with corresponding grills with 6 tables in 2 sections of the park that are protected by covered wooden structures. There are many amenities located at Arsenal Park including a playground, softball and playing fields, tennis courts, basketball courts, street hockey court and a skate park. The sprinkler located near the playground area is available from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day. The park is palatial and beautiful. There is easy accessibility to public transportation.
The park is located behind Marshalls Department store at 485 Arsenal Street Watertown, MA 02472.

Filippello Park: This park is located on the east end of town at 109 Arlington Street,Watertown, MA 02472 situated between Arlington and Grove Streets. Recreation Department accepts applications for picnics from residents only on a first come basis. There are 10 tables with corresponding grills with 6 tables in 2 sections of the park that are protected by covered wooden structures. There is a large playground area on the Arlington Street side of Filippello Park and a smaller playground on the Grove Street side of the park. There are 2 playing field areas on each end of the park with a sprinkler park between them. The sprinkler park is available from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day.  There is street parking on Arlington Street and a parking lot from the Grove Street entrance.
