On the Watertown Seal is a picture of an English Colonist and an Indian exchanging, as peace tokens,  bread for fish.  Captain Roger Clap landed at Nantasket Point in 1630 and rode up Charles River to Gerry's Landing with the first party of Watertown Colonists.

The Town Clerk is the official record keeper for the Town of Watertown. Records kept by the Office of the Town Clerk include, but are not limited to, vital statistics (birth, death, and marriage certificates), Business Certificates (DBA’s), appeals from decisions of the Zoning Board of Appeals and Planning Board, and filings from City Boards and Commissions. The Town Clerk is the official keeper of the Town Seal and Town Ordinances.

Duties
All notifications and documents are public records, with some exceptions pertaining to vital records. The Elections Department, responsible under Massachusetts General Laws to the Board of Election Commissions, has a wide range of responsibilities mandated by Chapter 50 through 56, among others, to ensure fair and impartial elections in the Town of Watertown. Duties include taking the annual census, generating voting lists, jury lists, and maintaining these listings throughout the year.
